Cranbrook Academy of Art is the fabled graduate-only program in architecture, art and design that gave birth to American modernism. From Eero Saarinen to Charles and Ray Eames to Jun Kaneko to Nick Cave, Cranbrook's unique curriculum-free, studio-based program is anchored by ten celebrated Artists- and Designers-in-Residence, all of whom live and practice alongside 150 students on our extraordinary historic campus.
At Cranbrook Academy of Art, students are invited to study and live on our Saarinen-designed campus, which features: private studios, state-of-the art workshops, a renowned Art Museum and 300 acres of forests, lakes and streams, all a short drive from the dynamic emerging art scene of Detroit. The focus at Cranbrook is on studio practice in one of ten disciplines including Architecture, 2D and 3D Design, Ceramics, Fiber, Metalsmithing, Painting, Photography, Print Media, and Sculpture. The program is anchored by our exceptional Artists- and Designers-in-Residence, one for each discipline, all of whom live and practice on campus. Dozens of internationally acclaimed artists, critics, curators and gallerists visit each semester to supplement the individualized instruction, critiques, and mentoring of the Artists-in-Residence and our Critical Studies Fellow. There simply is no other school—no other place—like this, as the extraordinary history of the Academy suggests. Not only are we ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the top ten places to study art and design in the United States, we are also the highest producer of student Fulbright scholars per capita in the U.S., and that’s just the beginning. If you have an undergraduate degree and are ready for a uniquely stimulating environment, we invite you to apply.
