AICAD BIPOC Academic Leadership Institute

The AICAD BIPOC Academic Leadership Institute is a year-long professional development program (with the option to extend into a second year) for BIPOC faculty and staff who are emerging as academic leaders and would like to consider pursuing roles such as Dean, Provost, VP, and President. The BIPOC ALI aims to foster the further development of emerging academic leaders who have shown promise in leadership and will continue to work towards the goal of creating learning and working environments that are inclusive, equitable, and just.

The program, running from October 2023 through May 2024, will consist of two elements:

Monthly large group professional development webinars (approx. 90 minutes per session). These sessions focus on introducing participants to elements of how the institution operates that participants may not have direct experience with previous to senior administration, and as an introduction to concepts/skills required for senior administrators. Based on feedback from prior years and past participants, we aim to focus on building knowledge around equitable practices in higher education administration. Some topics for this year include: Working with a Search Firm, DEI in the Current Climate, Negotiations, and Governance/Board Relations.

Mentorship small groups. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in monthly mentorship sessions led by current administrative leaders to provide a more intimate opportunity to connect with BIPOC colleagues from other institutions. These open discussions will focus on achieving a path towards a senior leadership position as well as opportunities and challenges to enacting change at the leadership level.

We encourage those who are interested in exploring pathways to senior higher education administration to apply. Registration is limited. Accepted participants will choose their mentorship focus upon being accepted into the program.

Specific dates and times for the monthly sessions and mentorship groups will be set after registration is complete. All webinars will be recorded and shared with participants in case attending live is not an option due to scheduling conflicts.

“I think the BIPOC ALI was most valuable in two areas: providing content on topic-specific expertise and connecting with my small group that helped me build community with peers.” -2022-23 Participant
