Pao Houa Her ’09 recently sat down with the Star Tribune to discuss her impressive achievements and current photography work.

Her, who says she once aspired to be a writer, was initially drawn to photography due to its storytelling aspect. After studying photography at MCAD, she became the first Hmong person to earn an MFA at the Yale University School of Art.

Her’s current photographs explore the duality between being Hmong and American. Her work includes a wide range of color and black-and-white portraits, landscapes, and interiors. Some of her particularly strong images examine aspects of everyday life—both in her own community and in Hmong communities overseas.
